Is Apple Cider Vinegar safe for skin?

Apple Cider Vinegar Has Many Brilliant Uses, But is It Safe for Your Skin?

For centuries, apple cider vinegar has been a go-to natural remedy for many cultures around the world. Of late, Apple cider vinegar is back in vogue, known for its versatility in human health - specifically targeting digestive, hair and skin health. Before jumping right into it, let's have a look at what ACV actually is.

What is Apple Cider Vinegar?

By simply crushing some apples and extracting the juice you have the recipe for apple cider vinegar. Once that simple stuff is out of the way it's time to add some choice bacteria and yeast which begins the fermentation process - turning sugars into alcohol. Then it's time to let specialised acetic-acid forming bacteria do their thing as they transform alcohol into vinegar.

This is where the health properties lie: in the acetic acid and bacterial armada. Fun fact; It's even said that Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, used ACV to help disinfect and treat skin wounds more than 2,000 years ago!

So what exactly are the apple cider vinegar benefits for skin?

How does Apple Cider Vinegar aid your skin:

For things like acne, eczema and face lines on your skin to dandruff on your scalp you can see the symptoms begin to improve with the use of ACV. This is due to its antibacterial and antifungal properties that help to kill bacteria and yeast on the skin. ACV’s high acidic levels have been known to help some people’s skin conditions since the human skin lies on the acidic end of the pH scale. As a result, ACV rejuvenates some of the skin's natural pH. Bare in mind, it's necessary to use with water and not just by itself due to its acidity.

Beyond just treating skin conditions, ACV is also utilised for more general cosmetic uses. Containing citric acid (an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) used to exfoliate) ACV will smooth out and even brighten your complexion. Polyphenolic antioxidants are also present which might help improve the skin's appearance.

Uses of Apple Cider Vinegar for skin:

One of the common uses of ACV is the treatment of acne. Acne affects most of us and can be very difficult to ease, however with a mix of our ACV Tonic and water to wash your face you may indeed see some minor improvement overtime. There is no scientific evidence to prove its use in helping acne or even eczema but in many cases individuals have experienced improvements thanks to the ACV’s antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. It’s recommended to start off using apple cider vinegar on your face 2-3 times a week and build up slowly from there to see how you personally react to it.

Much like with acne, ACV can provide benefits in many eczema cases. Simply soak the affected area in a mixture of lukewarm bath water and about a cup of our ACV Tonic for about 15-20 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water followed by moisturizing. With treating eczema it's important to get checked first, since in some cases, a lot of people who suffer from eczema actually have elevated skin pH, which means the acidity of the ACV may cause irritation

Precautions:

Before trying any of these brilliant remedies it's highly recommended to check with a dermatologist beforehand, just to make sure that it is safe for your skin. As mentioned above, ACV is very acidic it can cause further irritation or slight burns if used on skin types that don't agree with it or that are hyper sensitive.

It’s also good to test it first on a small section of your face in a discrete area (under the jawline works) before covering your face entirely.
