Anxiety and Your Gut: What’s the Connection?
Anxiety is complicated. We are all likely to experience in some shape or form, at some time in our lives. And there’s no one cause, no single symptom and no definitive way to treat it or reduce it. While there are natural activities such as regular exercise, yoga and meditation which may help, new research shows the importance of the gut.
Read on to learn about how the gut and the brain are connected.
The Link Between Anxiety and Your Gut
New research from the British Medical Journal indicates that people who experience anxiety may benefit from better gut health. This comes from regulating the good bacteria in your gut using probiotic and non-probiotic food and supplements.
The study states the following –
“Increasingly, research has indicated that – the trillions of microorganisms in the gut which perform important functions in the immune system and metabolism by providing essential inflammatory mediators, nutrients and vitamins—can help regulate brain function through something called the ‘gut-brain axis”.
Researchers reviewed 21 studies that looked at 1,503 people. They found probiotics to have a positive effect on anxiety. More specifically, of the studies analysed, 52 percent showed a focus on gut health (either through taking probiotics or through healthy eating) to be effective.
